Reducing error with automation in MRI imaging

Design Director

Overview

In MRI imaging, each patient can be given a custom dose of contrast fluid to to ensure the clearest images are captured, but due to a highly manual, clunky & confusing interface, only 10% of technicians felt comfortable adjusting the default dosage for their patients. There was a huge opportunity to improve efficiencies and reduce re-scans by automating this process to ensure every patient gets clear images during every scan.

My team & I ran a research program to understand the pain points of technicians and establish a north star vision for the future of contrast dosing, as well as helping Bayer roll out their first admin center for hospitals to create their own automation rules.

Business goals:
🎯 Discover user limitations in administering custom MRI doses
🎯 Help senior leadership make a business case for automation with research findings & a compelling vision
🎯 Deliver a short term automation feature that allows hospital admin to create adjustment rules in existing interface

In the press

On-site research & demos of the contrast injection process

We conducted extensive on-site research, interviews & observation sessions with technicians to identify the challenges in their current workflow that prevent them from customizing contrast doses, such as insufficient training, time pressure, clunky and old interfaces and the device screen sitting in a separate room to the patient & MRI setting.

Developing and testing early concepts with radiographers

We tested concepts that addressed key pain points in the current interface making the workflow more visual and intuitive, with faster & easier ways to record patient data, in-line alerts to suggest out-of-typical range biomarkers and the ability to seamlessly switch between patient and dosing focus screens.

A new vision for patient data entry & auto-adjustment of protocols

We delivered a data entry vision for Radiographers to increase customization of protocols by making it easy to enter more patient data, and apply adjustments automatically based on a hospital-approved rules engine or Bayer-approved suggestions, all on a hand held portable screen.

Beta contrast rules feature

We helped Bayer complete their first step in delivering automation by delivering designs for a rules library feature that was pushed to their current Centargo customers, that allows hospital admins to create a simple set of auto-adjustment rules for micro- adjustments to contrast dosing based on patient data captured by technicians during their consults.
